How We Can Use AI Responsibly in Peer Review

If AI helped you write a review or summarize a paper, say so. Same goes for authors who use AI in drafting their manuscripts. Transparency keeps trust intact.

2. Keep editors and reviewers in the driver’s seat

AI should support, not replace, human judgment. Let the algorithms do the grunt work, but make sure final calls come from qualified experts.

3. Set clear policies

Publishers need to clearly spell out what’s okay, what’s not, and what disclosure looks like.

4. Check for bad behavior

Use detection tools to catch prompt injections or other shady tactics. If someone’s gaming the system, there should be consequences.

5. Audit for bias

AI models aren’t neutral. They need regular testing for bias and “hallucinations,” so editors know where to trust them—and where to double-check.

6. Educate the community

Editors, reviewers, and authors need training on how AI works, where it fails, and how to use it ethically.

Balancing Innovation and Integrity

Here’s the tightrope:

AI can make peer review faster, more consistent, and less of a bottleneck in publishing. But it can also open the door to subtle manipulation, bias, and over-automation if we’re not careful.

The goal isn’t to reject AI altogether—it’s to integrate it in ways that enhance human review, not replace it. That means:
