Cover Design

A book cover designer plays a pivotal role in shaping the visual identity of a book and contributing to its success. At Technica, our book cover designers can help you:

  1. Visualize your concept.
  2. Stay within your budget by providing various options, including updating or revamping a cover you created, working with you to choose an appropriate stock photo, or creating a full graphic illustration for your cover.
  3. Build the back cover — author biography and descriptive synopsis — whether it be author-created or we write the components for you.
  4. Understand the principles of layout, typography, and color, ensuring that the cover not only looks professional but also adheres to industry standards of print and digital mediums and that it will display correctly whether an eBook, hard or softcover, or thumbnail on your website.
  5. Design a cover that visually communicates your book and that you are happy with it.
Interior Design & Formatting

Our team of experienced editors and designers at Technica can help! Here are 3 important elements of interior book design:

  1. Typography: Choosing the right font, size, and spacing for the text can greatly impact the readability and overall feel of a book. Our experienced designer will consider the tone of the writing and the target audience when selecting typography.
  2. Layout: We consider elements such as margins, spacing, and chapter openings and headings to create a visually appealing and easy-to-read design.
  3. Graphics: The use of graphics, such as images, charts, and illustrations, can greatly enhance the visual appeal of a book’s interior pages. Our designers will consider the style and tone of the graphics to create a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing design. Additionally, graphics can be created or re-drawn, or we can help you find stock photos and illustrations.
Platform Upload Assistance
  1. We can help you choose a platform (Lulu, Barnes & Noble, Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, Apple Books, etc.) and upload your files for print and e-book publication.
  2. If needed, we can re-format your Word or PDF file to match a specific trim size for any platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is print on demand?

Print on demand (POD) is a way to publish books where copies are only printed and shipped when someone purchases them. Instead of printing hundreds of books at once, copies are made one by one (or in any number) as needed. This is an efficient way for authors who self-publish (or any small publisher) to manage the high costs of bulk printing, book warehousing (even if that turns out to be your garage), and the waste and cost of retrieving, storing, or disposing of unsold copies. POD is a great option for authors who want to share their stories without breaking the bank.

How much does print on demand cost?

The cost of print on demand (POD) will vary depending upon such factors as trim size (the final dimensions of your book), the actual number of print pages in your book, the weight and quality of the paper you select, and the type of binding you select (hardcover, paperback, etc.). Generally, prices can range from around $5 to $25 per paperback copy. This price typically includes printing and binding (shipping costs are paid by the buyer). It’s important to do some research and compare different POD companies to find the best option for your book project and  budget, to ensure it’s the right choice for you.

How do I upload my book to a print on demand website?

Most print on demand (POD) platforms (Lulu, Amazon, IngramSpark, for example) have fairly straightforward instructions on how to upload your book project. Nearly all will require print-ready PDF files of your interior book pages and your cover spread.

Can Technica help me upload my book to Lulu.com or Amazon?

Absolutely. If you have any questions or problems before or during upload, feel free to reach out to us at info@technicaeditorial.com. One of our experienced editors will be happy to chat with you and resolve your problem.

What is page formatting?

Page formatting refers to the way that pages of a book are designed and presented in print. This includes the type area on a page, the type font (or fonts) that is (or are) used, the size of the type, the spacing between the words and lines of text on the page, and if there are any images or colors added. Formatting also considers design elements such as the alignment of text and images on a page (for example, photos, graphics, or tables). When you format a page, the goal is to make it easier for people to read and understand the information you are sharing. This can help make your work look more professional and polished. It’s important to have a clean layout so that the reader can focus on the content without getting distracted by clutter.

Should I pay to have my cover designed professionally?

If you want your book to stand out and attract readers, hiring a professional to design your book’s cover is certainly worth considering. A professional designer can create a visually appealing cover that will help your book make a great first impression. While there is a cost involved, the investment may pay off in increased sales and visibility. Consider your budget and goals before making a decision,  and ask to see samples of any designer’s work before you commit to them.

What services does Technica Editorial offer?

Our services range from soup to nuts! From manuscript evaluation and peer review office management to various levels of editing, page layout, and cover design, typesetting/composition, and final deliverables for journals, books, and magazines. We can also help with print and print-on-demand options.

What are your areas of expertise?

We can help you create an original work or assist you in revising and refining an existing project. Our depth of knowledge spans multiple disciplines – including STEM and medical research, environmental sciences, finance and economics, accounting, education, musicology, fiction, and poetry.

How will we communicate on a project?

We value our partnerships with our authors and know that the success of your books depends upon our relationship with you. We take customer service seriously. We assign a team member to work directly with you. We will work with you on the phone or through email – whatever your preferred style of communication is.

What is the difference between a copyedit and a proofread?

Copyediting takes place early in the publishing process, it is the first stage in the editorial production process. Once the file is copyedited, it will be returned to you for review and any additional comments or changes. The proofread, a final review for any remaining glitches or inconsistencies, takes place once the manuscript has been typeset.

What is a print ready file?

A print-ready file is a PDF that meets all of the industry criteria to successfully print your project.
